Common Social Media Colours

NOTE: This was a post migrated from my previous Ghost blog. If links don’t work and you would really like to see it, it’s probably posted somewhere in this blog.

Recently I’ve been working on the social media integration functionality for the next version of Mooziq and I came across the need to have handy list of colours that I could use for styling buttons/text related to a certain technology company.

So I did some digging and here’s a (hopefully) complete list of colours which kinda sorta defines their underlying brand.

Seems like there are some trends correlating the colours and functionalities of these platforms.

Content based platforms take on either red or blue. Time dynamic content (ie. audio/video) is almost exclusively red with the exception of Spotify (is this indicative of their intentions of making music more social/shareable?). Time static content (ie. files/text/image) generally use blue.

Connection based platforms take on either green (for the more dynamic and sporadic socialising ie. chats and conversation apps) or blue (for more static socialising such as networking or more serious communications).

Because I’m pretty thick skinned and because I want to see how the colours I chose stack up against other platforms, I included Mooziq (Disclosure: the platform I founded) as part of the above list.

When I chose the colours for Mooziq, it was based on design intuition (it just felt right) from the emotions/impression I desired to invoke. Analysing the colours of the different social media platforms now, I believe I managed to arrive at a colour quite close to my vision of the platform.

To be fair, I also chose red because we’re based in Singapore and well, because I’m Singaporean and one is only a patriot when not in one’s homeland. But well, let’s see how Mooziq does when it’s fully launched in middle of 2016 (hopefully).

I hope you found this post useful. Till the next time!
